Great Southern BioBlitz bee & flora surveys

Written by Melissa Adams, JCAFA

A massive thank you to the dedicated volunteers who turned up for our Native Bee Great Southern BioBlitz survey in Julimar State Forest, led by the ‘Bee Babette,’ Dr. Kit Prendergast, herself.

Our initial attempt for the September BioBlitz was hampered by rain – the bees definitely didn’t want to play. We quickly postponed the survey to October 26, and this time, while the bees were a little shy and overall activity was low, our team still documented three species in two genera and two families (Halictidae and  Colletidae) in the vicinity of Heine Road! Every piece of data is crucial for understanding the health of our local ecosystem.

A shout-out to Kelly and the Conservation Council of WA, who organised this event and Amber from the Northam Environmental Hub, who made sure that the Avon was included in the iNaturalist Great Southern BioBlitz project!

Meanwhile, on the north side of the forest, the Northam Environmental Hub led a pilot native flora quadrat survey with a small group of eager volunteers. Five lots of 10 x 10m2 quadrats were set up, where they surveyed every inch for just over an hour.

  • Average trees per 10m2: 4.8
  • Average native flora species per 10m2: 29.8
  • Average threatened and priority flora per 10m2: 2.5

What wonderful insights these surveys provide us. Thank you, citizen scientists, for helping us study and protect WA’s incredible biodiversity!
