Over the weekend of the 5th September this year, we will be conducting a Bioblitz in Julimar State Forest. The Forest is an incredibly biodiverse area, over 28,000 hectares of jarrah, marri and wandoo woodland which provides habitat to a vast array of fauna as well as over 500 different flora species.

However, much of the area has not been well explored and the Bioblitz will give us an opportunity to do just that. The Conservation Council of WA (CCWA) are working with the local environmental groups to coordinate the event.

So, what is a Bioblitz? It’s basically a snapshot in time, looking at the biodiversity of an area, recording what is seen and found during a specified, short period of time; in this instance, conducted in Julimar State Forest over a weekend.

A Bioblitz is a great way to learn more about the environment in which we live and also become involved in a local Citizen Science project. There will be lots of opportunities for you and your family to have a fabulous day in the Forest.

We have already had a number of experts agree to attend and they will be conducting guided surveys through the forest: Ornithologists looking and listening for the birdlife; Herpetologists looking for frogs and reptiles; Entomologists looking for insects; Botanists recording the plant species and Mycologists looking for fungi, to name but a few.

If you are an expert in anything that may be found in Julimar, we would love to have you along to share your knowledge and help with the guided surveys!

However, you don’t need to be an expert, to be involved. You may be an amateur local plant enthusiast, a local bird lover or just someone who loves being out in nature. We will also need people to help out with recording the sightings made, taking photographs to help with identification and spotting animals and interesting plants.

Most importantly, if you would just like to come along for the day and enjoy a guided walk or two in the Forest, we would really love to have you join us.
The guided surveys will be conducted in various places so we can cover the broadest habitat range within the forest, so there will be chances to explore areas that you may not have visited before.

There will be a registration process prior to the event, and you will need to book to attend. More specific details about the activities and registration process will be provided closer to the date.
