Subject: Urgent Request for Support: Reclassification of Julimar State Forest to National Park Status

Dear [Recipient Name],

I am writing to you today as a concerned constituent and conservation advocate to urge your immediate support for the reclassification of the Julimar State Forest to a fully protected National Park. This is a critical step necessary to safeguard one of our region’s most significant biodiversity hotspots from ongoing threats.

The Urgent Need for Permanent Protection

Julimar State Forest is an irreplaceable ecological asset, housing threatened and vulnerable species that cannot be adequately protected under its current State Forest tenure.

  1. Unique Biodiversity: The forest contains vital ecosystems, including remnants of the highly valuable Wandoo Woodland, which is under persistent pressure.
  2. Threatened Fauna: It is a crucial refuge for some of Western Australia’s most vulnerable marsupials, including the Chuditch (Western Quoll) and the Woylie (Brush-tailed Bettong). These populations face constant threat from habitat degradation due to logging, mining exploration, and the impacts of high-intensity prescribed burns.
  3. Habitat Loss: Its State Forest status leaves it open to activities that cause fragmentation and destruction of protective understorey – the very habitat required by species like the Woylie and the Black Cockatoo for nesting and foraging.

The long-term survival of these species depends on moving beyond multiple-use land management toward complete conservation status.

Ecological, Social, and Economic Benefits of National Park Status

Reclassifying Julimar as a National Park offers profound and lasting benefits that align with public interest and your electorate’s values:

  1. Ecological Security: National Park status provides the highest level of legal protection against destructive activities such as native forest logging and mining. This ensures the long-term integrity of the Wandoo Woodland and guarantees sanctuary for our endangered fauna.
  2. Sustainable Ecotourism: National Parks are powerful drivers of regional economies. By upgrading Julimar’s status, the area can attract responsible ecotourism, generating sustainable local jobs in services, accommodation, and guided experiences, moving away from resource extraction reliance.
  3. Community Well-being: Access to protected natural areas is essential for public health and well-being. A National Park offers enhanced opportunities for low-impact recreation, education, and community connection to nature, benefiting local residents and visitors alike.

I respectfully request that you champion the reclassification of Julimar State Forest within Parliament. Specifically, I urge you to:

  • Raise this issue directly with the Minister for the Environment and the Minister for Forestry.
  • Publicly advocate for the immediate review and upgrade of Julimar’s conservation status.

I would be grateful for the opportunity to discuss the scientific evidence supporting this essential change and look forward to hearing your firm commitment to protecting this priceless piece of our natural heritage.

Thank you for your consideration of this urgent and vital matter.

Sincerely,

[Your Name]
